Charcoal the Cat

Cats have not received too much attention in the blog.  Of the two brother cats, Striker and Charcoal, Striker was recently shown with Jack.  Charcoal mostly hangs out around the chick barn and the other day he was perched on a post.

Forage and Puppies

Took a walk with the puppies to inspect forage in the middle beaver field.  Eastern gamagrass has grown back to about 10 inches after being chewed to the ground a couple of weeks ago.

The oats also grew back to about same level.  The oat plants never really filled in very well this year, the growth is kind of sparse.   Rust was a problem, more fertilizer might have helped, but also a different variety more resistant to rust might help.

Now we get to a bunch of puppy pictures.

Ewe Lambs

The flock of ewe lambs are grazing in paddocks in the front field constructed with electric net fencing.  They are finished with the oats in the south field, that needs to be sprayed to kill all the primrose that is growing there.   The primrose is poisonous.

Anneika seems to like sitting out in the field with her sheep.

Update after a few days, the flock is moved to the next paddock.

Longleaf Sheep

The ewe flock, along with the rams, are being moved about to access the limited forage that is available now, in early spring.  They are in the Carney field, with their guardian dog, Kratos.  Of the few longleaf pine we have on the farm/ranch, here there is one with some low branches.   A picture opportunity to show longleaf pine and sheep together.

Pretty Weed

A pretty flowered weed that the sheep don't like to eat is threatening to take over the south field.  It seems to be difficult to kill with glyphosate herbicide.

Cutleaf evening-primrose, commen name.

Rams with Ewe Flock

We put the rams in with the ewe flock yesterday.  They used to get a daily grain feeding, which isn't feasible with the large ewe flock.   We have molases supplement tubs out with the flock, along with hay, as the spring forage is minimal now.  In any case, the rams with the yellow ear tags were interested in Kratos being fed.

They are all out in the 60-acres.

Selfie with Puppies

I take the puppies for walks to get them leash trained.  Part of the walk includes  familiarization with the back of the truck.   We took some pictures today.
